We've been on the road for 3.5 years and have experienced heavy rain, 2 hurricanes, and temperatures as low as 29 degrees and as high as 90 degrees. Since departing on our 2023 Journey we have had more rainy days than not across across the states.
RV owners face unique challenges when the weather strikes unexpectedly. Weather conditions on the road can range from thunderstorms to blizzards, so be prepared and prioritize safety. Let's talk about three essential tips for staying safe and secure in your RV during inclement weather.
Here we go!
- Plan ahead and stay informed: Staying informed about weather forecasts and planning ahead are keys to staying safe in your RV during inclement weather. Use reliable sources like weather apps, websites, or a NOAA weather radio to keep up with the weather. If you know what's coming, you'll be able to plan when to travel, find shelter, or hunker down.
Create a severe weather plan that outlines what to do in different scenarios. Locate safe shelters or campgrounds with storm shelters nearby. Take into account the weather conditions you may encounter when planning your route. - Prepare your RV to withstand inclement weather conditions: Before setting out on your journey. The following are a few key areas to consider:
- a. Make sure your RV's roof, windows, doors, and seals are properly maintained to prevent leaks during heavy rain or snowfall.
- b. Safety Equipment: Make sure your RV has essential safety equipment such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers. A weather radio can alert you in real time about severe weather warnings.
- c. Make sure your RV is stocked with supplies that include non-perishable food, drinking water, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, blankets, and extra clothing. When a weather-related emergency occurs, it can be extremely helpful to have these supplies on hand. We have an exit bag that contains clothes just in case we need to make a fast break.
- d. Be Flexible and Seek Safe Shelter: In severe weather conditions, you should remain flexible and prioritize your safety above all else. When warned of a severe weather event, you may want to alter your plans and seek shelter until the conditions improve.
3. Keep an eye out for local authorities' instructions: Follow evacuation orders if necessary. We have seen the devastation caused to RVs when owners had a we will stick it out attitude. Please don't be that guy... During inclement weather, look for designated storm shelters or nearby campgrounds that are prepared. Rather than risk your safety and that of your RV, consider changing your route or delaying your journey.
Staying safe during inclement weather is a top priority for RV owners. Keeping informed, preparing your RV, and being flexible can significantly reduce your chances of experiencing adverse weather conditions. Always put safety first. Take these three tips into consideration and travel with peace of mind, regardless of the weather.
Enjoy your travels and stay safe!
