Yes, We Cook in Our RV – And You Should Too!

February 27, 2025

We recently received a great question from one of our awesome subscribers, and it's a topic that many ask us about.

Do we mainly cook in our RV or outside?

Yes, we do cook inside. And we do it a lot.

I mean, think about it—if you live in a house, do you avoid cooking because you’re afraid of the smells? Probably not. So why should an RV be any different?

When we bought our 24-foot Class C Entegra Odyssey, we didn’t spend all that money just to tiptoe around like we were preserving it for the next owner. We bought it to live in it. That means we use the stove and even the air fryer (because, let’s be real, an air fryer is an RVer’s best friend).

Sure, there’s the occassional dish that we will cook that makes the RV smell a little spicier than usual, but that’s part of home life. We cook meals that make us happy, keep us healthy, and make this RV feel like home

What About Cooking Outside?

We get it—many RVers love the idea of cooking outside, and so do we! There's nothing like grilling up some burgers with a view of the mountains or throwing a steak on the Blackstone while enjoying the campground scenery.

But let’s be honest—cooking outside every single day isn’t always practical for us.

  • Weather matters – Ever tried grilling in a rainstorm?
  • Bugs exist – Nothing like seasoning your meal with a little extra protein in the form of flying insects.
  • Convenience is key – Sometimes you just want to wake up, make a hot breakfast in our pajamas, and not have to set up an entire outdoor kitchen.

So, while we do enjoy outdoor cooking from time to time, we primarily cook inside, because this is our home, not just a weekend getaway.

Worried about lingering food smells? We use a diffuser with essential oil. Scents like lavendar and lemon grass not only smell great they help to keep inects away.

Here are some easy ways to keep your RV smelling fresh while still cooking all your favorite meals:

  1. Ventilation is Key – Use your stove vent fan, open a window, or even crack the door while cooking. A small cross breeze makes a huge difference.
  2. Use an Air Purifier – A small air purifier with a carbon filter can help neutralize food odors before they settle in.
  3. Simmer Some Natural Deodorizers – Boil a pot of water with lemon slices, cinnamon sticks, or cloves after cooking to freshen the air.
  4. Take Out the Trash Regularly – Food scraps can linger and cause odors, so empty the trash frequently (especially after cooking strong-smelling foods).
  5. Clean Up Immediately – Wipe down surfaces, wash dishes, and clean grease off the stove as soon as you're done cooking to prevent odors from settling in.
  6. Baking Soda Works Wonders – Keep an open box of baking soda in your kitchen area to absorb lingering smells.
  7. Coffee Grounds Help Too – Placing dried coffee grounds in a bowl can help soak up strong odors over time.
  8. Essential Oil Sprays – A quick spritz of essential oils like citrus, lavender, or eucalyptus can freshen up the space.

Not Cooking in Your Home? That’s Not Practical

We didn’t buy our RV just to avoid using it. And if you’re thinking about full-time RV living, let me tell you now—cooking inside is just part of real life. Eating out every day gets expensive, and let’s be honest, home-cooked meals just hit different.

So, if you’re holding off on cooking because you’re afraid of lingering smells or because someone told you that RV kitchens aren’t meant to be used—let that go. A home, no matter how big or small, is meant to be lived in.

Enjoy your meals...
