RVing Across America: Tips for a Stress-Free and Enjoyable Journey

September 14, 2023

RVing across several states can be an amazing way to see the country and experience new things. We have been from Florida to Nevada and back. In just a few days we will be hitting the road and slowly making our way from Ohio back to Florida where we will spend the winter. The Nomad Lifestyle allows us to chase 70 degrees all year long.

However, it's important to be prepared before you hit the road.

Here are few tips 🛣️:

  1. Plan your route. Where do you want to go? How long do you want to stay in each place? What are the major attractions? What is the weather going to be like? Once you have a general idea of your route, you can start to book campsites and make reservations for activities. We use Harvest Hosts (<----you will get a discount when you click this link and we will receive a few bucks ), Passport America, Military Campgrounds and Kampgrounds of America. Our tool of choice for mapping our route is RV Parky.
  2. Pack for your trip. Make sure to pack all the essentials, including food, medication, clothing, toiletries, cleaning products and your electronic devices. You will also want to pack some extra supplies, such as paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper and a first-aid kit, and tools. Don't over pack adding unnecssary weight to your RV can cause issues. If you foreget something you can always purchase it on the road.
  3. Get your RV serviced. Before you hit the road, make sure to get your RV serviced by a qualified mechanic. This will help ensure that your RV is in good working order and can help to avoid any unexpected breakdowns.
  4. Be sure to complete safety checks. Before you hit the road, be sure to check your tire pressure and wiper fluid, secure all storage doors and the main door on your RV.
Secure all items in your RV before you travel. You don't want cabinets opening, items falling off walls and counters, and crashing to the ground.
  5. Learn the rules of the road. Make sure to research the rules for the states you'll be visiting so that you don't get a ticket.
  6. Be prepared for anything. RVing can be a great adventure, but it's important to be prepared for anything. This includes bad weather, health issues, mechanical breakdowns, and unexpected delays. Pack an emergency kit and have a plan in case something goes wrong.

By following these tips, you can be well on your way to a safe and enjoyable RV trip across several states.

Here are some additional tips to help you prepare for your trip:

  • Join an RV club or Facebook Group, Follow Us  🤣. This is a great way to connect with other RVers and get advice and tips.
  • Take a driving course for RVs. This can help you learn how to safely operate your RV on the road.
  • Slow down and enjoy the journey. Don't cram too much into your itinerary, or you'll be spending all day driving and all night sleeping. The best part of RVing is exploring the campgrounds and attractions at your own pace, not feeling rushed and exhausted.

We typically aim to drive no more than 2-4 hours per day. Even when we have a longer drive ahead of us, we make sure to stop every few hours to stretch our legs, use the restroom, give the RV a break, and enjoy a snack or meal.

With a little planning and preparation, you can have a safe and enjoyable RV trip across several states. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip today!
