Who Can Camp at Military Campgrounds?
The Department of Defense (DoD) sets eligibility rules, but each base may have unique policies. Here’s a breakdown of who is typically allowed:
Eligible Campers:
1️⃣ Active Duty Military – Members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserves can camp at military campgrounds with valid military ID.
2️⃣ Military Retirees – Those who have served 20+ years in the U.S. military and hold a retiree ID card can access all military campgrounds.
3️⃣ Veterans with Service-Connected Disabilities – As of January 1, 2020, veterans with a VA disability rating of 0% or more are eligible for base access, including campgrounds. You’ll need a VA Health ID Card (VHIC) to gain entry.
4️⃣ Medal of Honor Recipients & Former POWs – Those who have received the Medal of Honor or were Prisoners of War (POWs) always have access to military campgrounds.
5️⃣ DoD Civilians & Contractors (Limited) – Some bases allow current and retired DoD civilian employees to use their campgrounds, but this varies. Always call ahead to confirm.
6️⃣ Immediate Family of Eligible Members – Spouses and dependents of military personnel can camp, but they may need to be accompanied by the sponsor.
Not Typically Eligible:
🚫 General Public – Military campgrounds are not open to non-military-affiliated individuals.
🚫 Non-Disabled Veterans Without a VHIC – Veterans without a VA disability rating do not automatically qualify.
🚫 Friends of Military Members – Unless accompanied by an eligible sponsor, civilians cannot stay at military campgrounds.
